- Biography
Marc Reyes (pronouns: he/him/his) is the Coordinator in the Office of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships (OURF). A Midwesterner, Marc is from Kansas City, Missouri. He is a proud product of the University of Missouri system, receiving his bachelor’s from the flagship campus in Columbia, Missouri, and later his master’s from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
In his role in the OURF, Marc reviews and evaluates the awarding of select internal Honors College scholarships as well as recruits and advises GSU students on applications for competitive national fellowships. In addition, he consults and collaborates with staff and students on best research practices.
Marc arrives at GSU after a decade of working with students as a Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader, course grader, writing tutor, research assistant, teaching assistant, and most recently, instructor of record. Trained as a historian, Marc has assisted or led over a dozen different courses – mostly in History departments but also in English, Communication, Economics, and Digital Media & Design units – covering topics such as U.S. history since 1877, the history of digital culture, critical perspectives on digital media and modern India.
Bolstering research skills and improving as a writer are not just concepts Marc thinks about; he is an active practitioner as he completes his Ph.D. dissertation, a study of independent India’s atomic energy program and its transformation into a nuclear weapons program. This work combines foreign relation history with the history of technology and reveals atomic energy as a subject crucial to understanding India and its thinking and actions during the Cold War. To undertake this project, Marc has completed research in archives, libraries, research centers and think tanks which took him all over the U.S. and to four other countries (Canada, the United Kingdom, Austria, and India).
Marc’s work has been supported by the Organization of American Historians, the National Science Foundation, and the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations. From 2018-2019, Marc was a recipient of a Fulbright Study-Research Award (Fulbright-Nehru Fellowship) and a Critical Language Enhancement Award to study Hindi. His time in India and experience as a Fulbright scholar were incredibly meaningful and he is always happy to talk with students and potential applicants about the benefits of international education and cultural exchanges. His relationship with Fulbright continues to this day as a Fulbright Alumni Ambassador.
Joining Marc in Georgia are his wife, Libby, and two-year old son, Henry. Marc and his family are excited to make a home here in the Atlanta area and are always open to recommendations on where to eat, places to see, and other ways to explore their new community. In addition to his advising and research, Marc is an editor and co-founder of Contingent Magazine, a history-focused publication aimed at the public. In his free time, he enjoys seeing as many movies as possible, reading comics, and listening to 1990s music (especially alternative, hip-hop, and pop).
Whether you are a student, faculty, staff, alumni, or a potential collaborator, please reach out to Marc through email to book an appointment (virtual or in-person).
